Buy Roller Derby Wheels at Sucker Punch Skate Shop

If you're serious about roller derby, you know that choosing your wheels makes all the difference. Roller derby wheels determine how you skate, how fast you take off, and how much grip you get on different surfaces. No floor is the same, so your setup really matters.

At Sucker Punch Skate Shop, the largest derby and roller skate store in Europe, we're here to help you find the perfect roller derby skate wheels. Whether you're just starting out or you're a seasoned derby vet, our online shop has everything you need to skate fast and stay safe.

Buying Roller Derby Wheels: What to Consider

Choosing the right roller derby wheels depends on a few key factors—like hardness, size, width, and the surface you skate on. Roller derby wheels come in all shapes and sizes, and each combo affects your ride and performance differently.

Hardness of Your Roller Derby Skate Wheels

Hardness is one of the most important things when picking wheels. It's shown as a number followed by an “A” (like 84A or 103A). That number tells you how much grip the wheel gives you and how fast it rolls.

  • Soft wheels (84A - 88A): great for slick, hard floors. They grip well and absorb shocks, but roll with a little more resistance.
  • Medium wheels (89A - 94A): a nice balance of grip and speed, good for most surfaces.
  • Hard wheels (95A - 103A): max out your speed but offer minimal grip—ideal for sticky or rubber floors.

Your ideal hardness depends on a few things:

  • The surface: The harder the floor, the softer your wheels need to be to stay grippy. Hard wheels on a hard surface can cause slips.
  • Your weight: Heavier skaters often prefer harder wheels to avoid too much grip and drag.
  • Your skating style: Power skaters who want quick starts usually go with softer wheels, while technical skaters often favor harder ones.

Size and Width of Your Derby Wheels

Most roller derby skaters ride on 59mm wheels that are 38mm wide. That size gives you speed and maneuverability. Smaller wheels help you accelerate faster, which is super useful in roller derby when you're starting from a stop.

There are also 62mm derby wheels, which are especially popular with beginners. They're slightly wider and more stable—great if you’re still finding your feet. As you get better, you might switch to a faster, more compact setup.

Best Roller Derby Wheels for Different Surfaces

Most experienced skaters don’t stick to just one set of wheels—they have different setups ready depending on the surface. Some floors are smooth and slick, while others are sticky and soft. That’s why you’ll see derby players bringing multiple sets of wheels to games and tournaments.

Some advanced skaters even mix different hardness levels on the same pair of skates—for example, using harder wheels on the inside and softer ones on the outside. That can help with sharp turns and explosive starts. But heads up: this takes experience and a good sense of balance. Most skaters do best with a full set of matching wheels.

Lightweight Wheels for Speed and Agility

The go-to wheels for derby are typically harder indoor roller skate wheels. They have a thin urethane tread in various hardness levels, starting at 84A (soft) and going up to 103A (very hard).

Since derby floors are usually flat, you don’t need a thick tread. That’s why the core (hub) is large and as light as possible—without sacrificing strength. These wheels are much lighter than outdoor wheels, which need more urethane to absorb bumps. The thin tread and light core let you turn and accelerate with less strain on your muscles.
