What is Roller Derby? Roller derby is a contact sport . Two teams of five players each ride simultaneously on an oval track. The game consists of several ‘jams’, short matches of up to 2 minutes. The aim is to score points by getting a player, the ‘jammer’, past the other team's defending players, the ‘blockers’. Physical contact is allowed, but there are strict rules to ensure safety. The boots have no heel and are low, to just below or just above your ankle. This ensures that your ankle is free to move, so you can surface the better low leg work. The perfect size depends from person to person. Since you will be working hard in your shoes, it is important that they fit well. Remember that there is a certain weight on your feet. The shoe should be nice and tight around your foot so that it does not move in your shoe. The plates for entry-level skates are often made of nylon/plastic. This is an attractive option because of its low weight and ditto purchase price. The wheels are harder and wider inner wheels, suitable for balancing grip and glide on nice smooth surfaces. They differ in hardness between 84A (soft) and 103A (very hard). The size also varies, but most roller derby skaters opt for 59-millimetre wheels. The brakes are height-adjustable. This is really a must in roller derby as the toe stops are not only used for braking, but also for finding balance and stability when pushing. That agility, together with the length of your wheelbase, determines how manoeuvrable your plate is. Also important is the balance between a long and a short wheelbase. A long one means more stability at speed, a short one makes for a more agile plate and can sometimes makes you lose control where you don't want to.’
