    At Sucker Punch Skate Shop, you'll find dozens of wheel sets from well-known brands like Riedell (Radar and Sonar), Moxi Skates, Luminous, Atom, Roll Line, Chaya, Roller Bones, Rio Roller and many more. Reminder: you buy them in sets of 4, but it’s best to replace them on both skates. So, buy two packs to change a full set of skate wheels.

    The wheels differ in terms of hardness, diameter, and width. But what does that mean for your roller skating experience? Hardness is a measure of how much grip or slide your wheels offer. The size of your wheels mainly affects your speed, stability, and agility. We’ll clarify this below with some examples.

    Hardness of your skate wheels

    The hardness of your wheels is expressed in an A-value. This ranges from 78A (soft) to 103A (hard).

    • The lower the number, the softer the wheels and the more grip you have. On a very hard surface, you’d prefer to skate with softer wheels to ensure enough grip.
    • The higher the number, the harder the wheels and the more slide they offer. On softer surfaces, harder wheels are better, so you don’t stick to the surface too much.

    Diameter of your roller skate wheels

    • With a larger diameter, it’s easier to build and maintain speed. They are ideal for long-distance and speed skating.
    • A smaller diameter gives you more agility and less speed. These are typically used for roller dancing, rink skating, and tricks in the skatepark.

    Width of your skate wheels

    Most roller skate wheels are between 30 and 42 millimetres wide.

    • The wider your wheels, the more stable your skating is. This is especially helpful for beginners. Wider wheels also help you maintain your push longer while accelerating. That ultimate push is essential for speed skating.
    • The narrower your wheels, the more agile your skating becomes. Narrow wheels are particularly popular for roller dance and skateparks.

    Choosing your perfect roller skate wheels

    The large selection of roller skate wheels doesn’t make choosing easier. So it’s only natural to wonder which wheels you should use. Key factors include the surface you’re skating on, the environment (indoors or outdoors), and your skating discipline. Here are a few examples:

    • On a soft gym floor indoors, you typically have more grip. Skate wheels with a higher hardness are best for this.
    • On hard surfaces, you usually have more slide than grip. Think of coated or rough concrete (such as in the skatepark or on the bike path) or indoor wooden floors. Choose roller skate wheels with a lower hardness in these cases.
    • For speed skating, speed and stability are important. Fit your quads with wheels of larger diameter and width for this discipline.
    • Are you roller dancing or rink skating? That’s much easier with smaller, narrower wheels, as they offer greater agility.

    Replacing roller skate wheels: the Sucker Punch guide

    The difference between indoor and outdoor roller skates? It’s usually down to the wheels. If you practise multiple disciplines or switch between different surfaces, being able to change your roller skate wheels is a crucial skill to master. This guide will help you replace your wheels quickly and easily.

    1. Line up your tools: You’ll need a few roller skate tools to get started with your quads. Use a skate stool or spanner to loosen the nuts. A bearing press is useful for removing your bearings, but not essential.
    2. Out with the old: Use your skate tool to turn the nuts holding your wheels in place anti-clockwise. Carefully remove your roller skate wheel from the axle.
    3. Bearing with the bearings: Changing your roller skate wheels is the perfect time to maintain your bearings. Remove both bearings from your wheel using a bearing press, or by placing the wheel over the axle and gently pulling it towards you.
    4. Ready, set, assemble: Clean your axle and bearings with a clean cloth, and press the bearings firmly into your new skate wheels. Check that they’re secure before moving on to the next step.
    5. In with the new: Slide the new wheel onto the axle, place the nut back on, and carefully tighten it clockwise with your skate tool. Make sure the nut is secure, but that the wheel still spins smoothly. Now your new roller skate wheels are ready for use.
