    Skatepark rollerblades: the terminology

    Are you taking your first steps as a skatepark skater? Below you'll find more explanation of some important terms. That way, you'll immediately know what a slide on a ledge or an aerial in a bowl is.

    • Ramps are curved structures, half-pipes are U-shaped ramps.
    • Bowls are large, bowl-shaped structures that vary in depth and shape.
    • Rails are metal rods, ledges are low, straight edges.
    • Aerials are tricks you perform in the air, such as flips and spins.
    • Grindingand sliding is sliding along a rail or ledge with the wheels or chassis of your skates.

    Parts of skate park roller skates

    Boots for skatepark skates

    Skatepark boots can have either heeled or flat soles. We distinguish between hard boots, semi-hard boots and soft boots, just like inline skates.

    • Hard boots are usually inline skate shoes that are transformed into roller skates. They are usually made entirely of plastic or a similar material.
    • Semi-hard boots are half plastic and half soft padding material. Inline boots usually have a hard exterior and a soft interior. Roller skate boots are often reinforced on the inside and have a soft outside look.
    • Soft boots are reinforced in the usual places, but mainly consist of a flexible shoe or a shoe with a lot of padding.

    Plates for skatepark skates

    Basically, all roller skate plates can be used to start in the skate park. However, when you start with stalls and slides, certain plates are better suited than others. We're talking specifically about skatepark plates with the possibility of installing slide blocks on them and of replacing the standard trucks with wider ones.

    Wide trucks last a lot longer when you make a lot of slides than frames with only slide blocks. We distinguish two types of wide trucks: the 2.5" for narrower rails/tubes, which you'll find mainly on ramps and bowls, and the 3.0" for wider rails/tubes, which you'll find mainly on street skates.     Wheels for skatepark skates

    All types of wheels are suitable for performing tricks in the skatepark. Usually, roller skaters choose smaller and narrower wheels, between 55 and 59 millimetres high and around 22 millimetres wide. To determine the hardness of your skatepark wheels, look at the surface.

    • For concrete skateparks, we recommend harder wheels, between 96A and 103A, depending on the type of concrete.
    • For wooden and 'plastic' skateparks, you better use slightly softer wheels, between 92A and 98A, again depending on the type of wood or plastic.
    • For skateparks with different surfaces, e.g. wooden ramps and a concrete floor, match your wheels to the ramps. After all, that's where the bulges and ramps are. Moreover, it is much more dangerous to slip there than on the flat floor.

    Maintaining skatepark roller skates, how do I do it?

    Proper maintenance makes your skatepark skates last longer. Regularity is the keyword. Be sure to consider the following things:

    • Clean your skatepark roller skates with a slightly damp cloth after each session. Let them air out well to avoid sweat odours.
    • Inspect your skates monthly for damage and possibly determine which parts need replacing (soon).
    • Pay special attention to moving parts, such as the trucks and wheels. Oiling them once in a while does wonders for their smoothness.
