    Choosing the right roller derby wheels depends on several factors. Think about the hardness, size and width of the wheels, and the type of surface you play on. Roller derby wheels come in all shapes and sizes, and each combination has a unique effect on your skating style and performance.

    The Hardness of Your Roller Derby Skate Wheels

    One of the most important things to consider is hardness, indicated by a number followed by “A” (like 84A or 103A). This value determines how much grip you have and how easily you build up speed.

    • Soft wheels (84A - 88A): ideal for smooth, hard floors. They provide plenty of grip and absorb shock, but add a bit more resistance.
    • Medium wheels (89A - 94A): a good balance between grip and speed, suitable for average surfaces.
    • Hard wheels (95A - 103A): deliver maximum speed and minimal grip – perfect for sticky or rubber floors.

    Which hardness is best for you depends on a few things:

    • The surface: The harder the floor, the softer your wheels should be to avoid slipping. Wheels that are too hard on a hard surface can lead to uncontrollable slides.
    • Your weight: Heavier skaters often benefit from slightly harder wheels, to avoid too much grip.
    • Your skating style: Power skaters who want to burst off the line quickly tend to prefer softer wheels, while technical skaters often go for harder ones.

    The Size and Width of Your Derby Wheels

    Most roller derby skaters go for 59mm tall and 38mm wide wheels. This is the sweet spot for speed and agility. These smaller wheels help you accelerate faster, which is ideal in roller derby where you often start from a standstill.

    There are also 62mm roller derby wheels, which are especially popular with beginner skaters. They’re a bit wider and offer more stability – perfect for building confidence. As you gain experience, you might switch to a faster, more compact set.

    The Best Roller Derby Wheels for Every Surface

    Most experienced derby skaters don’t just own one set of wheels – they carry different combos to suit different surfaces. Some tracks are slick and hard, others sticky and soft. That’s why you’ll often see players bringing multiple sets of wheels to games and tournaments.

    Some advanced skaters even mix hardnesses on one pair of skates – for example, mounting harder wheels on the inside and softer ones on the outside. This helps with sharp turns and explosive starts. But be warned – it takes experience and balance. Most skaters are better off sticking to 8 matching wheels.

    Lightweight Wheels for Speed and Agility

    Typical roller derby wheels are harder indoor roller skate wheels. These have a thin tread made from urethane in varying hardnesses, starting at 84A (soft) and going up in steps to 103A (very hard).

    Because derby surfaces are usually very smooth, the tread doesn’t need to be thick. The hub (core) is large and as lightweight as possible, without compromising strength. The result is a relatively light wheel – especially compared to outdoor wheels, which have more urethane to absorb bumps. Thanks to the thin tread and light core, you can turn and accelerate with less muscle fatigue.
